First Lady Melania Trump took an unannounced trip to the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center to visit wounded troops, their families, and medical staff.

In a July 3 tweet, the first lady wrote: “I had a wonderful visit to @WRBethesda today. Thank you to the many dedicated service members & medical staff who take such good care of our men & women in uniform.”

The trip to the Bethesda, Maryland, facility was revealed by her spokeswoman, Stephanie Grisham, after the first lady arrived.

“[The first lady] has just arrived to @WRBethesda for an unannounced visit to combat injured service members & their families. This administration will never stop supporting our men & women in uniform & the families who love them. Thank you!!!” Grisham wrote on Twitter.

The first lady spent five days at Walter Reed after her kidney surgery in May and used her first appearance after her surgery to honor the Gold Star families.

“To all those who have lost loved ones in service to our country, our nation grieves with you,” Melania Trump said in a statement released after the event. “It is a solemn reminder that we, the American people, are able to live as freely as we do because of the selfless sacrifices of our men and women in uniform.”

Trump dedicates a significant part of her schedule to supporting the troops, veterans, and their families, be it attending Medal of Honor ceremonies, honoring military mothers on Mother’s Day, or helping raise money for the initiative of a Northern California boy, Preston Sharp, to place flowers and an American flag at the grave of each military veteran at the Redding Cemetery in California.

In November, Trump used the time when her plane was refueling in Anchorage, Alaska, to visit military families at the Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, where she played with children and briefly talked to parents and service members, The Associated Press reported.

“Thank you to the strong & courageous members of our U.S. military all over the world! Your continued contributions & commitment to the safety of our great nation will never go unnoticed or unappreciated,” she stated on Twitter on April 14.
