A Wisconsin medical doctor has come up with an exceptional way of raising money for and awareness of mental illness.

Dr. Adel Korkor is running a 5K run every day in 50 states.

“Yes, it’s difficult—it’s challenging—but it’s not as challenging as having mental illness,” said Korkor, who set up the Five Fifty Fifty Foundation. Its mission–to make the world a better place for those suffering from mental illness.

The movement kicked off on May 5, 2018 in Honolulu, Hawaii. It’s planned finish is in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on June 23.

Reporters caught up with Korkor on day 35 of running consecutive 5K events.

“I felt I could run a 5K and the fact that mental health is so common I should do it all over the country. I could run a 5K in all 50 states and the fact that it’s an urgent matter—I should do it in 50 days,” he explained.

So he’s been organizing 5K events and running with those who sign up and make a donation to his foundation.

He hopes to raise money and awareness for mental health problems.

“It is on the minds of a lot of people and I think those whose deaths, they were very unfortunate, but I think they’ve brought to light that this is a serious issue, that we need to focus more and spend more money on,” said an unnamed female participant at one of the runs.

Running also played a special role in Korkor’s life. He said it helped him deal with intense anxiety.

“Running saved my life, it allowed me to deal with anxiety, and allowed me to control the symptoms whenever I was anxious or stressed I would go for a run,” he said.

When he stopped practicing medicine, he decided to devote his life to mental health awareness.
