Risking your life whilst waiting for a train is not something you expect to do anytime soon. When this courageous young man in Chicago was faced with a dangerous situation, he didn’t think twice when it came to saving a life.
On a Monday morning in late October, Jessie Contreras was waiting to catch the train to work. He was standing on Logan Square platform at the CTA Blue Line stop when he heard a “really loud thud,” according to CBSChicago.
Today, I was walking down to the train & saw one of my coworkers, Jax, so random. So we were standing there waiting for…
A man had been standing near the edge of the platform, and he toppled backwards onto the train tracks, landing only feet away from the deadly third electric rail.
With a train due at any moment, Contreras leapt off the platform to save the man, who appeared unconscious.
“I was afraid for his life,” said Contreras. “He wasn’t going to be able to help himself.”
Contreras then dragged the man, who was around 6.5 feet tall, towards the edge of the platform, where his friend Mikaela Malicoat was waiting to lift the man to safety, aided by an onlooker.
“It’s insane how brave he was,” said Malicoat.
“It’s my duty to help whenever possible,” the humble Contreras said. “That was my moment, so I acted. For me personally, it was a God moment.”
Had Contreras not risked his own life, it would have been almost certain death under a train for the unconscious man. He was taken to Norwegian American hospital and treated for minor head injuries.
Contreras is indeed an inspiration to us all.
