MELBOURNE, Australia—“It’s wonderful,” said Jeffrey Appel, principal at a prestigious Melbourne law firm, as he enjoyed Shen Yun Performing Arts International Company’s first Australian performance at the State Theatre, in Melbourne, on Thursday March 27.

Speaking about the performers he said, “I think they are very good.”

Melbourne audiences were very appreciative of Shen Yun and applauded enthusiastically, also encouraging the soprano the audience erupted into spontaneous applause before she could finish, cheering loudly and requesting an encore.

According to the company’s website, “Through the universal language of music and dance, Shen Yun weaves a wondrous tapestry of heavenly realms, ancient legends, and modern heroic tales, taking you on a journey through 5,000 years of Chinese culture. Its stunning beauty and tremendous energy leave audiences uplifted and inspired.”

With two sisters born in Shanghai, China, Mr. Appel has a good understanding of China and he appreciated the New York-based Shen Yun’s visual and auditory representation of five millennia of Chinese culture.

“I enjoy Chinese culture and I think it’s showing a very beautiful side of the history of Chinese culture,” he said adding that Shen Yun had “a lot of colour, a lot of life, a lot of history, and culture.”

Mr. Appel thought it was important for Shen Yun to portray China’s rich heritage.

“I think this is part of the modern world and they have got to do, exactly what they are doing, introduce their culture to the outside world so it can be embraced and form part of society.”

“The beautiful thing that I see is that it is taking you through the history of the development of the Chinese dynasties and you are learning how each dynasty had its own cultural interpretations.”

Mr. Appel has been with his law firm for “twenty five years and acts and continues to act for some of Melbourne’s highest profile personalities,” according to their website.
