Former first lady Laura Bush stopped short of endorsing any candidate, but dropped strong hints that she would rather support former first lady and Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton, than the Republican frontrunner Donald Trump for president.

“I want our next president—whoever he or she might be—to be somebody who is interested in women in Afghanistan and who will continue U.S. policies … that we continue to do what we’re committed to do as a country,” Mrs. Bush said during the annual Women in the World summit in New York, as reported by The Washington Post and The Telegraph.

Laura Bush, who was a registered Democrat before marrying President George W. Bush, has recently published a book on Afghan women in conjunction with her husband’s institute.

Hillary Clinton has given a cover endorsement for the book, writing: “For over a decade, Laura Bush has been an ally and advocate for the women of Afghanistan and, in particular, has worked to ensure that the voices of Afghan women are heard.”

Donald Trump has been criticized for his foreign policies, and quoted saying that he would target the families of terrorists.

Bush’s nod towards Clinton appears to be a part of a trend of Republicans who would prefer Clinton over Trump in a contest between the two.
