A prominent Mexican politician, Diego Fernández de Cevallos, sometimes called “El Jefe Diego,” was released Monday after seven months in captivity. He met with press today, but gave no details of his kidnappers or his experiences.

Fernandez was kidnapped on May 14 at his ranch in central Mexico, near the state of Queretaro, according to AP.

The politician is a member of the ruling National Action Party (PAN), and ran for president in 1994.

Kidnappings are not uncommon in Mexico, where drug wars claim thousands of lives each year.

This kidnapping, however, had the nation fascinated, though few details are currently known. The kidnappers released photos of Fernandez, where he was pictured blindfolded and bare-chested, and left a calling card of “The Mysterious Disappearers,” according to AP.

It is rumored the ransom was for $20 million, but this has not been confirmed.
