[xtypo_dropcap]T[/xtypo_dropcap]he United Nations is calling on the authorities of three countries to bring the murders of four journalists to justice.
Two Iraqi journalists, Riad al-Saray and Safaa al-Khayat, were shot in unrelated incidents on Sept. 7 and 8. Afghan journalist, Sayed Hamid Noori, was stabbed on Sept. 5 in Kabul, and Angolan journalist Alberto Graves Chakussanga was shot in his home Sept. 5.
“The wave of journalist killings we have seen in recent days is cause for deep concern and must stand condemned,” said Irina Bokova, director general of the U.N. Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization on Friday.
Bokova said in a press release that it is important to defend the rights of journalists, especially in “countries such as Afghanistan and Iraq where conflict has wrought so much damage to the social fabric of the nation.”
According to the Committee to Project Journalists, at total of 29 journalists have been killed this year.
