DePuy Orthopaedics, a unit of pharmaceutical giant Johnson & Johnson, issued a recall on Thursday of 93,000 hip implant systems—ASR XL Acetabular System and the ASR Hip Resurfacing System.

The company issued the safety recall after discovering that some patients experienced pain and required additional surgeries after utilizing the company’s hip replacement parts. Both products were pulled off of the market late last year, DePuy said.

“Many doctors insist that DePuy knew about the ASR failure two years ago, but failed to inform patients or address the problem,” according to a statement from law firm Aylstock, Witkin, Kreis & Overholtz, PLLC. “Since the start of 2008, the FDA has received about 300 complaints regarding the ASR implant, most involving patients who had the implant removed soon after receiving it.”
