I don’t own a handgun, but when I hear the current White House occupant Joe Biden speak about gun control, my reaction is to want to go out and buy one.
I’m sure I’m not alone.
I do own a shotgun for home protection, but, although I am an absolute supporter of the Second Amendment, I haven’t bought a handgun because I’m either too busy or too lazy to practice. At my age, fitness, so I tell myself, is more important, so I spend most of my free time playing tennis or at the gym.
To be responsible, gun owners should get to the range at least every other week and should also have taken courses in firearms training for real-world situations, a completely different thing from target practice, and ultimately more important.
Still, when I heard Biden make his (or his handlers’) predictable pronouncements after the latest horrific shootings, my reaction was to, shall we say, “bite the bullet” and finally buy a semi-automatic pistol like a Glock 19, which I have tried on several occasions. And, yes, that will mean enrolling in some real-world courses.
Why am I doing this (and, as indicated above, suspect others are)?
It’s not just because the Glock 19 and similar semi-automatics may soon be outlawed because the president seeks legislation restricting magazine capacity to 10 bullets, making the guns unusable, or that he wanted to ban their 9mm bullets in the first place.
More importantly, the original impetus for the Second Amendment, not surprisingly omitted or ignored by Biden in his speech, wasn’t for hunting or even for home defense against criminals, least of all for target practice.
It was to protect the citizen from an oppressive government, something the Founding Fathers knew all too well from their experiences with the British.
Ours is allegedly a government of, by, and for the people. It behooves us to be armed against an increasingly more powerful force that is able to track our every move, if not our every thought.
Add to this that Biden et al. appear to have little genuine interest in school safety, only in political manipulation for their ends. “Hardening” of the schools, the most logical reaction if you really cared to prevent these shootings, is evidently off the table in favor of something symbolic like restricting AR-15s to those over 21 when 18-year-olds already serve in the military where such weapons are no more than popguns.
Our administration wants to restrict guns when a recent poll conducted by TheEconomist/YouGov shows that more of the public wants to put them in the hands of teachers to protect their children:
“Among all respondents, 51 percent said they either ‘Favor strongly’ (31%) or ‘Favor somewhat’ (20%), while just 37 percent said they ‘Oppose somewhat’ (14%) or ‘Oppose strongly’ (23%) ‘giving schoolteachers and school administrators the option of being armed at school.’”
One can only assume if people were polled about having only one entrance to a school with an armed policeman at the door, even more would concur.
Of course, we all know where gun restriction leads—gun confiscation. Just ask Beto O’Rourke. And yes, we’ve seen it all before.
“In 1938, Hitler signed a new Gun Control Act. Now that many ‘enemies of the state’ had been removed from society, some restrictions could be slightly liberalized, especially for Nazi Party members. But Jews were restricted from working in the firearms industry, and .22 caliber hollow-point ammunition was banned.
“The time had come to launch a decisive blow to the Jewish community, to render it defenseless so that its ‘ill-gotten’ property could be redistributed as an entitlement to the German ‘Volk.’ The German Jews were ordered to surrender all their weapons, and police had the records on all who registered them. Even those who gave up their weapons voluntarily were turned over to the Gestapo.”
We all know where this led.
So, Joe Biden, congratulations—you just sold another handgun.
