Japan’s parliament approved a $38 billion emergency budget for immediate relief and rebuilding efforts following the March 11 disaster on Monday.

Part of the emergency budget will be used to construct housing for tens of thousands of people who lost their homes.

“All those who want, will move in the temporary housing by the Bon [holiday] period in August,” Japan’s Prime Minister Naoto Kan in a statement referring to people who lost their homes in the disaster.

Lawmakers unanimously passed the bill on Monday. All eyes will now be on a budget proposal that will address a full-scale reconstruction of the disaster stricken areas.

About 26,000 people have been confirmed dead or are still listed as missing after the disaster.

A 20 km (12.4-mile) no-go zone is still in effect around the affected Fukushima nuclear plant, which continues to leak radioactive material.
