The construction of a new uranium enrichment plant is set to begin as Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad approved the site for the new enrichment facility Monday.

At present, Iran has two enrichment plants, of which one is in production. Plans for 10 new plant sites were approved by the Iranian government in November last year.

The United Nations has demanded that the enrichment of uranium is halted over concerns of the possible creation of nuclear weapons.

Tehran itself claims that its nuclear program is to generate electricity and service medical purposes.

The United States is seeking to impose tougher sanctions on Iran over its nuclear program, but so far China and Russia, members of the U.N. Security Council who hold veto rights, have objected to tougher sanctions on Iran. Iran’s announcement comes a day after a nuclear conference hosted in Tehran.
