Apple Inc.’s iPhone sales have exceeded Blackberry’s market performance, according to Strategy Analytics Inc.

The global research and consulting firm said that smartphone sales have increased by 78 percent from a year ago with the iPhone superseding RIM’s Blackberry. Apple sold 14.1 million iPhones whereas Canada’s Research in Motion Ltd. (RIM) shipped 12.4 million Blackberrys from the July to September quarter.

Nokia’s sales have eclipsed both Apple and Blackberry, coming in with 26.5 million handsets. The rest of the competition such as Sony Ericcson, Samsung, and HTC also gained more ground in market share.

Although the open source Android operating system for smartphones is becoming more popular, Apple’s dominance still remains strong. Previously, RIM achieved a 46 percent benchmark growth rate in history, however with the evolution of the smartphone market, Apple has taken the lead, with iPhone sales increasing 91 percent from a year ago.

Strategy Analytics said, “RIM continues to be hampered by a limited presence in the touch screen segment, as a result of which its Smartphone market share fell to 16 percent from 20 percent a year earlier.”

During Apple’s earnings announcement, Apple boss Steve Jobs boasted that the iPhone “handily” outsold the BlackBerry during the quarter, and he didn’t see the RIM catching up any time soon.

According to Jim Balsillie, co-CEO of RIM, “RIM has achieved record shipments for five consecutive quarters and recently shared guidance of 13.8 [million] to 14.4 million BlackBerry smartphones for the current quarter.”

“Apple’s preference to compare its September-ending quarter with RIM’s August-ending quarter doesn’t tell the whole story because it doesn’t take into account that industry demand in September is typically stronger,” he said.

“As usual, whether the subject is antennas, Flash, or shipments, there is more to the story and sooner or later, even people inside the distortion field will begin to resent being told half a story,” Balsillie said in a statement.
