Internet Explorer 9, Microsoft’s newest web browser, has reached more than 2.3 million downloads since its release on March 14. However, the number is not large compared to the 8 million downloads for Firefox 3, according to PC World.

The new browser gained popularity for its fast speed, streamlined design and strong security features. IE 9 proved to have the fastest browsing speed compared to other major browsers including Opera 11.01, Chrome 10.0.648, Firefox 4 Release Candidate, and Safari 5.0.4, according to a test conducted by Preston Gralla for Computer World.

The web browsing speed is a significant improvement over IE 8, which took five to six times longer to complete the test. IE 9 also follows web standards as well as other browsers, another drastic change from IE 8, which was not able to follow web standards effectively. It is also compatible, albeit not the most compatible, with HTML5.

IE 9 is a relatively successful release as it helped Microsoft keep a grasp on the 57 percent of the browser market it holds. The company had previously dominated the market, holding approximately 90 percent. However, critics of the browser have pointed out several weaknesses of the browser as well.

None of the popular gadgets that require browsers, especially tablets, are using IE 9 because they had already opted for other browsers. Lance Ulanoff for PC Magazine describes IE 9 as a glass of milk brought in too late after a person has already finished eating a piece of pie and left the room.

With IE 9 running on no existing phones or tablets, it is hard for the browser to compete with ones like Safari, which runs on all of Apple’s popular products.

In addition, IE 9 is only compatible with Windows 7 and Vista, so Windows XP users, which make up half of all Windows users, will be excluded from access unless they upgrade, according to Bloomberg.

With Firefox 4 coming out on March 22, and Chrome 10 on the rise, IE 9 faces stiff competition, especially since a majority of web browsers have gained a bias against Internet Explorer throughout the years and see it as a sluggish and out-of-date browser.

Overall, however, IE 9 has met, if not exceeded expectations. Web surfers may find that its performance can rival Chrome and other browsers, and Windows users should update to experience the improvement over IE 9’s predecessors.
