One American and five Iranian citizens have been charged with violating a trade embargo with Iran by providing the Islam Republic with satellite technology.
According to the American Justice Department, the violation resulted in an Iranian satellite equipped with a camera being launched into space in 2005.
“The indictment alleges that the defendants violated the Iran trade embargo by creating a front company to conceal the fact that they were providing goods, technology, and services to Iran in return for millions of dollars,” said U.S. Attorney Rod Rosenstein in a statement.
Nader Modanlo, a naturalized U.S. citizen born in Iran, is currently the only defendant in custody. He faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison on each of three counts of violating the Iran trade embargo, according to the Justice Department.
A trade embargo against Iran was imposed by then U.S. President Bill Clinton in 1995.
