Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) has officially divorced from her husband, Ahmed Hirsi, according to reports.

It comes just one month after the congresswoman filed a petition saying there had been an “irretrievable breakdown” in their marriage.

The former couple were first married in 2002 but split in 2008 and Omar went on to marry British-born Ahmed Elmi in 2009.

However, she and Elmi later divorced in 2017 and in January 2018 she remarried Hirsi, who she says is the father of her three children.

Omar reportedly filed for divorce from Hirsi in early October, and the marriage was dissolved on Tuesday, Nov. 5 after paperwork was signed by court personnel.
According to TMZ, court records show the former couple have agreed on joint legal custody of their children, aged 16, 13, and 7 and neither will pay spousal support.

They say the records also show that the children will attend school in Washington where Omar works, and will regularly travel to Minnesota to visit their father.

Omar’s attorney, Jaime Driggs, told the publication: “Anyone going through a divorce is glad when it is over and this case is no exception. Ilhan is grateful that she and Ahmed were able to come to a resolution for the sake of their children.

“Like any other family in this situation, Ilhan wishes for privacy and will not be commenting any further.”

The news of the divorce comes just months after a Washington, D.C., woman accused the Democratic congresswoman of having an affair with her husband.

At the time the accusation was made in August, Mail Online claimed Omar had been having an affair with her married aide Tim Mynett, whose own wife Beth filed for divorce from him in August.

The publication claimed Omar and Mynett had been seen holding hands while leaving a restaurant in Los Angeles and that she had moved out of the family home she shared with Hirsi, into a penthouse apartment.

Furthermore, Mail Online said that Omar and Mynett were not only dating, but living together “on and off” at a secret apartment in Washington and had been planning “romantic vacations” together.

A source allegedly told the publication: “Right now they are more or less living together whenever she is in D.C. They say they travel as business associates when they are staying in the same hotel rooms. They are even planning a romantic vacation at Christmas.

“The suspicion is that when their divorces are finalized they will quietly decide to make it official.”

At the time, Omar was asked by WCCO-TV if she had separated from Hirsi or was dating anyone, to which she said, “No, I am not.”

The congresswoman, who has been fiercely private about her personal life, added, “I have three beautiful, little children and a family to care for… so for me, my focus is doing the work that I feel I was destined to do.”
