Identical Twin Brothers Named Valedictorian AND Salutatorian at Same High School Graduation

A pair of identical twins from Toledo, Ohio, will graduate high school together this year—both have their sights set high.

The high-achieving 17-year-olds are both top students at Scott High School. Deontae, who has a GPA of 4.5, will be the class valedictorian, while twin brother Deontre, whose GPA was a hair under at 4.4, will be the salutatorian.

Both are equal in ambition.

According to the twins, their friendly competition with each other is what spurred them on to academic success. From an early age, they dreamed of being on the honor roll.

“We didn’t know what honor roll or the principal’s list was until the second grade,” Deontre told CNN. “Then we wanted to be on it all the time.”

The twins’ mom, Victoria Lampkin, takes some of the credit for their academic achievements. She attributes it to how they were raised; she and their dad allowed them the freedom to make their own choices—something she never had in her youth.

“I didn’t tell them to not do anything. It was up to them, because this is their life,” she said. “That’s another reason they got this far.

“They are so busy, I have to send a text every day to know where they are,” she says, adding that they are “always focused.”

The boys are so similar that teachers and classmates alike have trouble telling them apart, although they have some notable differences.

“Deontre is more goofy and I’m more serious,” Deontae explains. After getting to know them little better, though, “they can tell the difference, based on personalities,” according to Deontae. Deontae was born 20 minutes earlier than his twin brother.

Among their similarities, like most teens, they both love pizza, they both enjoy listening to rap music, and they are also planning to attend the same college, Ohio State University, both majoring in electrical engineering.

But they decided not to live together while going to university, as they want to branch out and find their own niche. Eventually, they would like to one day start their own engineering firms back in their hometown, and help rejuvenate the area. On top of this, Deontre hopes to one day garner the title “doctor.”

“There are a lot of abandoned homes in the area,” Deontae said. “We will renovate the area and help train local students who are interested in learning as much as possible.”

For now, though, both brothers are planning the speeches they will deliver at their graduation; Deontre will focus on the theme of “it’s not about where you start, but how you finish,” and his brother will discuss the topic of the “future and moving on,” reported CNN.

Scott High School Principal Dr. Carnel Smith summed up their characters well:

“They are magnificent young men,” he said. “The school has a great deal of tradition and pride and everyone is proud of them. They are the epitome of what a Scott Bulldog is.”
