SAN JOSÉ, Calif.—Shen Yun Performing Arts brought the San José Center for the Performing Arts alive with the sights and sounds of ancient China on Saturday, May 16.

San José boasts a marvelous ethnic diversity, offering a wide variety of exciting cultural, recreational, educational, and entertainment opportunities. An enthusiastic audience welcomed Shen Yun.

The internationally acclaimed New York-based performing arts company seeks to revive the true, five-millennia-old Chinese traditional culture. Those who have seen this world-class show are struck by the unique charm of Chinese classical dance, a defining part of Shen Yun’s production.

At the matinee session on the second day of its stop in San José, the largest city in the Bay Area and located in the Silicon Valley, Mr. Bathini, a video engineering manager for a global Internet company, was in the audience.

Mr. Bathini said this was the first time that he had seen Chinese classical dance and thought the synchronization in the dance was excellent, saying, “I have never seen something like this before.”

“So many dances—immaculate and precise,” he said.

He particularly enjoyed the dance Welcoming Spring. He said, “It was extremely well-coordinated and colorful.”

Mr. Bathini found the music very soothing, which he said seems to have “medicinal value … iI’s very relaxing.”

The Shen Yun orchestra brings together two of the world’s greatest classical music traditions, Chinese and Western, in a masterful fusion. With Western instruments as its foundation, the orchestra brings out Chinese musical flair through a variety of Chinese instruments.

Being of Indian heritage, Mr. Bathini felt that Shen Yun would be well-received in India saying, “I’m sure people will come …, and it will be well received.”

In one of the contemporary dances Heaven Awaits Us Despite Persecution, the dance tells the tale of a father who is persecuted for practicing Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline banned in China. The scenes that ultimately unfold in this program present a message of hope and belief that good people are ultimately rewarded, even if not in this lifetime. Mr. Bathini thought this scene was “really touching.”

Upon learning that Shen Yun cannot be shown in China, he expressed hope that the show would be able to be seen in China in the future, saying, “I hope they welcome their own culture back.”

New York-based Shen Yun performs again in San José on Sunday, May 17, before traveling to Portland, Oregon.
