Indian security forces clashed with hundreds of protesters in the Kashmir Valley Sunday leaving 24 people injured, including eight policemen.

The clashes came in spite of a curfew imposed on major towns in the valley. The curfew was put in place following violent protests Saturday in which protesters set fire to public buildings.

On Sunday, angry protesters hurled stones at the home of the Education Minister Peerzada Mohammad Sayeed, after which guards opened fire injuring 15, according to Indian English language newspaper, The Hindu.

The minister managed to flee his home under police protection.

Over 70 people have been killed in the past two months in the most intense protests Indian controlled Kashmir has seen in the past two years. Anger against Indian authorities flared up after the killing of a 17-year-old student by Indian police.

Demonstrators are protesting Indian rule of the predominantly Muslim region, which has been under contention since it was freed from British rule in 1947.
