CHINA—The case of detained human rights lawyer, Guo Feixiong, has been transferred to the Guangzhou City procuratorate, according to his wife Zhang Qing. Guo was arrested after assisting villagers of Taishi Village in Panyu District, Guangdong Province in protesting the local authority’s embezzlement of villagers’ land sales funds. He has been detained for three months.

On September 14, 2006, he was detained by the Guangzhou City police station and formally arrested a week later. Guo had been previously charged with engaging in “illegal operations” for independently publishing books in 2001.

Guo’s wife Zhang Qing told Hong Kong’s Mingpao newspaper that last Saturday she received a letter from her husband that said he had received a notice from Guangzhou City’s procuratorate on December 28, 2006. The notice stated that the police had transferred his case to the procuratorate and that relatives may engage a defense attorney.

She said that she had asked Beijing human rights lawyer Mo Shaoping to defend Guo. She also pointed out that before Guo’s arrest; he was actively involved in the release of arrested Beijing rights lawyer Gao Zhisheng, and that the authorities created a charge to stop her husband’s efforts.

Zhang also said that for the past three months, she had requested to meet with her husband four times but her requests were rejected. She was only allowed to send him some clothing. She went on a 24 hour hunger strike in protest.
