We all know that garlic is highly effective in keeping mosquitoes at bay, but these days, many people have cottoned on to the fact that garlic is the very model of superfood. As for honey, we know that this was the very first sweetener and ingredient for the very first fermented beverages, including the superdrink kombucha.

The health benefits of both ingredients are widely documented, but have you ever wondered what would happen if you combined the two together?

First, let’s look at the benefits of consuming garlic. Garlic contains a natural chemical compound called allicin, which is an amino acid. This element has been successfully used an antibacterial agent for treating highly drug-resistant infections. A Canadian study also showed that patients suffering from common cold benefited from treatment with allicin.

Cultures all over the world came to discover the medicinal benefits of garlic, and when King Tut’s tomb was discovered, archaeologists found cloves of garlic inside.

As for honey, its use for fighting bacteria go all the way back to ancient Egypt! Scientists have identified the powerful compound hydrogen peroxide in honey, which helps account for its incredible antimicrobial activity. Some researchers even believe that honey, like garlic, could be one of the keys for combating the increasing number of germs and “superbugs” that have developed resistance to antibiotics.

Another benefit of honey is its ability help fight allergies by exposing people to small amounts of pollen from local flowers and trees. Their bodies can identify and get used to these sources, thus avoiding big histamine reactions.

So garlic and honey both have a lot to offer in terms of fighting off the bad stuff that gets you sick, especially in the cold, damp days of winter. But they can also help you detoxify your system and lose weight in the process! For a one-week cure that will help prevent the buildup of bad cholesterol, lower blood pressure, equalize blood sugar, and clean out your gut, try combining honey and garlic to double their healing properties.

First, you’ll want to peel two to three cloves of garlic and crush or chop them. Doing this will help release the allicins, the beneficial compounds inside. Don’t saute or roast the garlic, as cooking it will the reduce the allicins that you can absorb.

Next, you’ll want to add your honey, about 1 tablespoon (or 15 milliliters). Make sure to use raw, unfiltered honey, because this will have more of the natural anti-bacterial properties. These can be destroyed when honey is pasteurized, filtered, or homogenized. Also, make sure to use honey from local bees, as this will expose your body to the pollen likely to cause allergies.

Last but not least, you should eat this combination on an empty stomach, before eating a meal or drinking anything, as it will be diluted by all the other things you’re consuming.

Are you dealing with early symptoms of a cold, or are people around you starting to feel under the weather? Then combine honey and garlic with some other standout natural remedies for a particularly effective cold and flu tonic.

In addition to your usual portions of raw garlic (two to three cloves) and honey (1 tablespoon), you’ll need to add some raw apple cider vinegar (with the “mother”), ginger (1 tablespoon), which was known to be medicinal in ancient China, and some chilies.

All of these ingredients have major anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, just what you need when your immune system is under attack.

While you might balk at the thought of the strong smell of raw garlic, just imagine that Mary Poppins had sung about “a spoonful of honey” making the medicine go down!
