Hong Kong-born Chinese Canadian Member of Parliament (MP) Jenny Kwan Wai-ching recently confirmed to the media that she was briefed by the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) that she had become a “target” of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), presumably due to her criticism of the CCP.

In an interview with Canadian media, The Globe and Mail, a few days ago, Jenny Kwan revealed that CSIS had briefed her earlier, saying that she had been targeted by the CCP as early as 2019 because she spoke out for the human rights situation in Hong Kong and Xinjiang. But for security reasons, she could not reveal further how she was on the CCP’s radar.

Kwan participated in the “June 4 Democracy Walk” commemorative event held in Vancouver last Saturday, May 27, marched with about 200 people to the gate of the CCP Consulate in Vancouver, and delivered a speech at the scene. She said that having been targeted by the CCP as a member of parliament, she could imagine how difficult it would be for ordinary people. “For ordinary Canadians who have family or relatives in Hong Kong and mainland China, their fear is real. The danger is real.”

In an interview with Taiwan’s Central News Agency (CNA), Kwan said that she would not be intimidated by the CCP and would not be silenced in any way. “I support Hong Kong people and the Uyghurs in fighting for basic human rights. I, and other MPs, voted in the parliament to support the motion to condemn the CCP’s treatment of the Uyghurs as genocide. We want to tell the government that foreign interference of any kind will never be tolerated.”

Hong Kong-born Jenny Kwan emigrated to Canada with her parents when she was nine. She has been in politics since 1993. She has been deeply involved in the rights of disadvantaged groups as one of her political agendas for many years. In 2021, she participated in the joint signing of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics boycott and repeatedly condemned the CCP’s oppressive methods against Hong Kong and Uyghurs in Xinjiang.
