Hobby Lobby ‘Fires Employee For Divorcing Husband’ is Satire

A federal appeals court on Thursday, June 27, 2013 ruled that Hobby Lobby stores have a good case that the federal health care law violates their religious beliefs in ordering them to provide birth control to employees, and that they shouldn't be subject to millions in fines while their claim is considered. An article saying that Hobby Lobby has fired “33-year old Jennifer Silverton” of Scottsdale, Ariz., because she got a divorce is fake.

“Hobby Lobby fired an employee yesterday for divorcing her husband without company approval,” the satire reads. “33-year old Jennifer Silverton of Scottsdale, Ariz., spent seven years as a cashier at the arts and crafts retail giant and was promoted to assistant manager just two weeks ago.”

It adds: “However, her employment was abruptly terminated for reasons of ‘moral laxity’ after upper management learned she had divorced her husband two months ago after six years of marriage.”

The Daily Currant “report” has thousands of shares and tweets as of Monday.

But the article is satire, and The Daily Currant has a disclaimer which explains what it is trying to do.

“The Daily Currant is an English language online satirical newspaper that covers global politics, business, technology, entertainment, science, health and media. It is accessible from over 190 countries worldwide - now including South Sudan,” the disclaimer says. “Our mission is to ridicule the timid ignorance which obstructs our progress, and promote intelligence - which presses forward.”

It continues: “Our stories are purely fictional. However they are meant to address real-world issues through satire and often refer and link to real events happening in the world.”
