Heartwarming Photo Captures Assistant Principal Lying on the Ground to Help Autistic Kid

For many kids who have learning and developmental disabilities, going to school can be a difficult experience. In addition to being aware of their differences from the other kids, they often struggle to succeed in classroom situations.

However, what can really make a big difference in the lives of these children is when adults take the time to support them and show them the compassion that they truly deserve. This is exactly what happened when an assistant principal at an elementary school in Marion got to down to the level of a child to help support him. Now the photograph of this administrator is going viral.

“It’s really awesome to know from a parent’s standpoint, that there are people that care that much about your child.”

The heartwarming gesture was captured at Garfield Elementary School with a very special kid named LJ Compton. Only 8 years old, LJ is endowed with a larger-than-life personality and has been diagnosed with autism and Down syndrome.

LJ’s boundless energy and difficulty concentrating on schoolwork might keep some parents from putting their kids in school, but his mom is lucky to have great people at the school who understand the challenge.

As LJ started out the 2019 school year, there was a new assistant principal, John Smith, at the school, and his mom hoped they would get along. As it turned out, Smith knew just how to relate to LJ, perhaps because he has a young child of his own.

One day at school, the bus was running late, and LJ got really tired of waiting for it, so tired that he just collapsed and lay on the sidewalk. Not everybody would have known how to handle this, but Assistant Principal Smith had a great idea and handled it in the best possible way.

Smith just got down on the ground and lay with him. The moment was captured by Amber McKinnis, an employee of the school.

LJ’s mom then shared the picture on social media, writing, “I absolutely LOVE this… LJ’s school has a new assistant principal this year… Mr. Smith… apparently LJ was having a “moment” and he got down on his level to help him out. This is why even though we live across town… LJ still goes to Garfield!!!”

Amber was so touched with the gesture that she said she just had to take this picture. She further added, “It was the most amazing thing I’ve seen! Our hearts melted and LJ enjoyed it.”

However, little did Steph know that the sweet picture would go viral and get over 1,000 likes.

What Steph was perfectly happy to do was put the attention on Mr. Smith, who had made such a big difference in her child’s day. Surprised by the viral explosion her post had caused, she posted, “let’s keep sharing and get Mr. Smith on the news!!!!”

Dozens of people took to the comments section on Compton’s Facebook page to talk about what a great teacher he had been for them.

One social media user wrote, “the system needs alot of Mr Smith who has not only a big heart but passion love and understand with kids who have special needs especially autistic.”

While another commented: “All teachers principals and personnel should be like this. It really helps the students.”

As for LJ, it seems that he won himself a new friend and advocate at the school.

Mrs. Clark’s class decorated socks for World Down Syndrome Day- LJ even decorated a pair for Mrs. Lemont, who forgot hers today!
