The construction and startup of a 30 megawatt (MW) wind energy project Kahuku, won Hawaii $117 million.

According to the U.S. Dept. of Energy (DOE), which is giving a loan guarantee on a conditional basis, the project will create 200 jobs, power 7,700 homes, and reduce dependence on oil. U.S. Secretary of Energy Steven Chu announced the project with Kahuku Wind Power, LLC late last week.

The loan guarantee is financed through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

The company will install 12 2.5 MW wind turbine generators and a battery energy storage system for electricity load stability, according to a press release from the DOE.

The Kahuku project is located on Hawaii’s most populated island, Oahu, and is part of Hawaii’s Clean Energy Initiative goal of meeting 70 percent of the state’s energy needs with clean energy by 2030.
