When Iris Howards, from London, United Kingdom, got in the car on her 86th birthday with her grandson, a radio and TV presenter by trade, she could not have expected the way he would employ his professional skills to surprise her most wonderfully.
While the grandson is secretly filming himself and his “nan” on a drive through town and listening to the radio, an unexpected announcement scratches through the speakers.
“We interrupt this broadcast to bring some breaking news,” said the announcer. “Please listen very, very carefully.” It took a few seconds before nan caught on that this was all part of an elaborate surprise.
“Iris Howard is celebrating her birthday,” the announcer said. “Commonly known for winning the best Nan competition ten years in a row, the 86-year-old is often described as an incredible person and loved by all her friends and family.”
The grandmother’s jaw dropped on realizing what trickery David had been up to. The announcement followed with a recorded montage of birthday wishes from family members and friends from the United Kingdom and across the world. She looks completely dumbfounded as she listens to her loved ones’ beautiful birthday messages with delight.
At the end of the recording, she breaks down in tears and starts searching inside her purse for some tissues. Her grandson tells her not to get emotional, to which she replies, “I can’t help it.”
But David still has one more trick up his sleeve.
Watch the video:
David tells her that he’s “gutted” for having been unable to reach out to Iris’s brother in Australia with whom she is very close to. “And I really tried to get him,” he said. “We spent weeks trying to get hold of him. But we couldn’t get a recording.”
As soon as he suggests they try another radio station, we hear the voice of Iris’s brother sending her birthday wishes and reminiscing about the times when they were children. “I would also like to wish you all the best, and hope you have a great time with the family,” he says.
By the end of the recording, Iris is completely sobbing uncontrollably. To which David emotionally states, “I didn’t want to upset you. We just wanted to show you how much you mean to us.” And he confessed that he feels “guilty now.”
The beautiful clip ends with Iris still crying in the car while David is driving and singing Happy Birthday to her.

The young man explains in the YouTube caption, “do something a little bit different for my nan this year.” And his beautiful gesture went viral almost immediately. The video garnered over 1.5 million views and hundreds of comments.
It was also liked on Facebook over 800 times, and the heartwarming moment was picked up and covered by several news outlets at the time.
David was grateful for the media attention as he explains in an Instagram post: “Thanks to everyone for their kind words! Been a rather strange week, to say the least. Seriously can’t believe the reaction it’s had. Nan is now very showbiz and even got spotted by a stranger in Sainsburys.”
What a beautiful surprise at how David chose to show his love and appreciation towards someone special. His recording didn’t just impress his “nan” but also showed the internet what makes a good grandson.
