When she first attended the 11th season of America’s Got Talent in 2016, Grace VanderWaal, then 12, was not all that confident. She joked she might win if there were a miracle, before she started her song. Then, the “miracle” really happened. And it happened again and again…
When VanderWaal, the musician from New York State, returned to the AGT stage as a guest performer in August 2017, she sang an original song: Moonlight.

“A doll made out of glass. All her friends think that she’s great. But I can see through it all. And she’s about to break,” she sang.
The performance won heartfelt applause from both the audience and the judges—Simon Cowell, Mel B, Heidi Klum, and Howie Mandel—who gave her a standing ovation.

VanderWaal’s Moonlight may sound catchy and upbeat, but did you know that a friend’s struggle with depression inspired her to write the song?
“The story is someone going through depression and seeing the way they’re changing and kind of that fake, altered personality. A lot of people go through depression, and if you know someone or think someone is, please talk to them and try and reach out,” the teen singer shared in an Instagram video.
“I was just writing from my own personal heart, to get it out,” she told USA Today.

The singer and ukulele player VanderWaal became a sensation from her very first audition when she got the golden buzzer from judge Howie Mandel. She was then crowned the season 11 winner, garnering a million-dollar prize and headlining show in Las Vegas at age 12.
During the season 11 finale, she performed her viral audition song I Don’t Know My Name to a packed audience, including special guest Stevie Nicks.

After host Nick Cannon announced her name, the then-12-year-old VanderWaal fell to her knees and burst into tears. “How does it feel? These are tears of joy, right?” the host asked.
“Yes, of course!” VanderWaal responded, with tears streaming down her face.
“[W]e like to be a little different … and not like anybody else,” Stevie Nicks told Billboard, referring to both VanderWaal as well as herself. “She’s got it. Whatever happens, Grace is going to the top.”

VanderWaal has since been signed to Simon Cowell’s Syco Music at Sony Music’s Columbia Records. Judge Simon Cowell said all this excitement is just the beginning for this teenager.
“It’s a lot to take in, but I’ve got to hand it to her,” he said, as reported in Billboard. “She’s a very smart, calm, focused girl and I think she knows what she wants to achieve and what we always say to artists in this situation is it’s not a race.”

VanderWaal was hailed by Simon Cowell as the “new Taylor Swift,” and was thrilled when she received flowers from Swift, herself, in congratulations for her big AGT win.
“It’s great to be here!” VanderWaal told the crowd during her guest return to the AGT stage.
“It’s living proof that this show changes lives,” said host Tyra Banks.
“The songs she wrote and performed on AGT were not only catchy but emotional and unique to her own sound, a mix of raw and folk,” Lindsay Peoples wrote for New York Magazine.
