German Defense Minister Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg temporarily dropped his doctoral title on Monday amid allegations that he had plagiarized his thesis.

Allegations of plagiarism in Guttenburg’s 475-page Ph.D. study emerged last week. While the minister denied the allegations on Friday, he acknowledged on Monday that he had made mistakes, but said he didn’t make them on purpose.

The otherwise highly popular 39-year-old politician, who is also a baron, has received nicknames such as “Baron Cut-and-Paste” in the German media.

His Ph.D. study has been posted to a wiki page by German Internet users that are checking the document for plagiarism. The site suggested on Monday that plagiarism had been found on more than 70 percent of the pages.
