Four Ways To Avoid The Winter Blues

The winter blues can affect anyone, but according to the Mayo Clinic, Seasonal Affective Disorder or SAD affects more women than men. SAD is a form of depression that happens during the fall and winter when there is less sunlight for people to enjoy. Here are four ways to deal with the winter blues or SAD and get through the fall and winter months in a more enjoyable way.

Attitude Is Important

“A positive attitude helps tremendously when dealing with the winter blues”,according to Mark Singy, a registered nurse at Passavant Hospital. Many people will want to use positive affirmations on a daily basis to keep their spirits up. Watching funny shows on television has helped many people suffering from the winter blues because of the laughter they will experience. They should also be around people that are positive rather than negative in order to avoid confrontations with angry types of people.

Exercise To Keep Healthy

Getting the proper amount of exercise is important. Several times a week for a form of exercise will allow a person to feel better during the fall and winter months. Exercise can include dancing, jogging, weight lifting or any other type of physical activity. It is also a good idea to get a doctor’s check up during the months when they are feeling lethargic to make sure that nothing else is wrong.

Fresh Air

Getting fresh air is important. During times when the temperature isn’t unbearable, it is important that people get outside to reap the benefits of fresh air. Staying indoors too long is not healthy for a person because they need the benefits of the fresh air and sunlight.

Artificial Sunlight

Artificial sun lamps can really help a person that is highly affected by the winter blues. They will find that the added impact of the sun lamp will lift their spirits and put them in a better mood. Using it for fifteen minutes on a daily basis has helped many people that suffer from depressive symptoms during the fall and winter months.

A person should make sure that they follow the above tips in order to lessen the tribulations of the winter blues. Since it is very important that they understand that the feelings of depression are temporary, they will benefit from the tips listed above. They will feel better and look forward to when the spring and summer come around again.
