In an unusual effort to increase road safety, the emirate of Abu Dhabi is attempting to teach children as young as 5 safe driving skills by giving them a chance to drive themselves.

In what will be called “Traffic City,” children will learn how to drive safely on a complete network of roads, roundabouts, and traffic lights in the “city,” while being monitored by police. Children from 5 to 12 years old will be able to drive electric cars with a speed of 9.4 mph, 13–17-year-olds will be allowed to drive in gas fueled cars at speeds up to 12 mph, reported Abu Dhabi’s The National newspaper.

Traffic City is Abu Dhabi’s latest attempt to create a safer driving culture.

“Our problem here is that nationals do not have enough road safety awareness, even the residents who come to live here are more committed to the rules than emirates,” Maj. Ahmed al Niyadi told The National.
