Firefighters climbed 110 stories in full gear to honor the 343 firefighters who lost their lives during the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. There were events held across the U.S., but a number of firefighters climbed buildings in Denver and Sacramento.
Sacramento-area firefighters took part in the 9/11 Memorial Climb at the Renaissance Tower, which is only 28 stories, but the firefighters will go up and down the tower four times each, which is 110 stories.
The 343 firefighters on 9/11 had to climb 110 stories of the World Trade Center towers in full gear.
On Wednesday, the fire department said that around 343 participants took part, according to News10.net.
The firefighters donated $25 each, with the funds going to the FDNY Widows and Children’s Fund. Those who weren’t able to take part in the climb were able to participate in a 5K and 10K run.
In Denver, a similar event took place, with hundreds of firefighters climbing 55 flights of stairs twice, according to CBS Denver. Nearly 400 firefighters across Colorado, Idaho, Wyoming, and New Mexico took part.
“Each firefighter today is going to be climbing with a picture and name tag of a firefighter who died on 9/11. Then after the climb is over they’ll call that family to let them know that we haven’t forgotten,” Denver Fire Asst. Chief David McGrail told the station.
