Bangladeshi authorities have lifted a ban imposed on the social networking website Facebook after it was blocked last week over the publication of caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad. “The ban on Facebook has been lifted late on June 5 after the authorities removed the objectionable contents from the sites,” a senior official of the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission told Reuters.

Earlier Pakistan, which is also predominantly Muslim, had blocked the social networking website over a competition to draw the Prophet Muhammad, but lifted the blockade late last week. Many Muslims regard representations of the prophet as blasphemous. Hundreds of people took to the streets in the capital, Dhaka, calling for actions against Facebook, according to Reuters. With 1 million users in Bangladesh, Facebook has become increasingly popular among Bangladeshis.
