NEW YORK “It’s really mesmerizing, and it puts you in a very tranquil state … it is very uplifting … it really makes you feel more peaceful watching it.” This is how Ms. Beal, an executive of a pharmaceutical company, described Divine Performing Arts (DPA) 2009 World Tour after seeing it in the Brooklyn Academy of Music, New York on January 4.

When talking about DPA, Ms. Beal used the word “beautiful” six times. Ms. Beal herself has been dancing classical ballet for over 10 years, and she thought that the dancers in DPA portrayed elegance and grace, and the hand and feet flexions of the dancers were unique.

Ms. Beal was further amazed by the technique involved in the dance. She thought it is “definitely something that takes some surely years and years of cultivation,” but the dancers were doing it almost effortlessly. It was as if they were floating, she said.

What struck Ms. Beal the most was DPA’s creative use of the costumes and the backdrop. She pointed out that there was a scene of the flowers blossoming in the dance Welcoming Spring, where the dancers were using their fans to draw a picture that corresponds with the backdrop. “It looks like a fan, but it’s really a flower … it’s almost like a 3-D dance.”

What DPA is presenting to the audience, as Ms. Beal tells it, is a mature level of dance. Knowing the movement is not all there is to DPA’s touching dances, she said. She could see that to make the dances the way they are, “[the dancers] have to embody something.” She has a lot of appreciation for this as it makes the dances lively and invokes feelings in the audience.

She especially liked Monk Ji Gong Abducts the Bride because as she saw the dance, she really felt like there was a story being told. “I was watching it as a play rather than dancing,” she said.

Moreover, The Miraculous Exhibit touched her a lot, because when the student was learning the Falun Gong exercises, she could feel his excitement.
