The European Union has issued sanctions against the Ivory Coast’s incumbent president Laurent Gbagbo, after he refused to give up power following recent presidential elections.

The country held elections on Oct. 31 and Nov. 28, in which the EU, United Nations, and African Union deemed Gbagbo‘s opponent, Alassan Ouattara, was the winner.

The sanctions are focused on Gbagbo and his supporters, in an attempt to enforce the results of the elections and aid Ouattara’s taking office.

The Foreign Affairs Council of the EU wrote that it “has decided to adopt without delay targeted restrictive measures against those who are obstructing the process of peace and national reconciliation, and in particular who are jeopardizing the proper outcome of the electoral process,” in a statement issued on Dec. 13.

Part of the sanctions will involve freezing assets and revoking visas of those assisting Gbagbo.
