The United Arab Emirates is considering fining traffic law violators according to the size of their salary.

Last year, 960 people died in road accidents in the United Arab Emirates, the National reports. According to the United Nations, the number of deaths in 2007 in UAE was almost twice the global average.

Increased measures are being taken to bring the number traffic accidents down. The new fining system aims to target rich residents, who otherwise do not feel it when they get fined several hundred dollars.

“So it would not be fair to increase the amounts for everyone,” said Ali al-Marzouqi, the head of public health and safety at the Dubai Health Authority, according to the National.

Al-Marzouqi said there are also plans to change the insurance premium system, linking it to the driver’s record of violations.
