Dubai ruler Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum said Sunday that the emirate is seriously considering a formal bid for the 2020 Summer Olympics.

Al Maktoum said Dubai has a lot to offer the games, including a peaceful multiethnic country, and a “can do” cultural mentality. Dubai has fairly extensive, expensive sports infrastructure, and good hosting record for sporting events.

However the Sheikh said that Dubai would have to be realistic and will be conducting feasibility studies. The intense summer heat could be a problem for athletes and the country is still in debt. The average daily maximum June to September is about 100 degrees.

“If we decide to make a bid for the Olympics we will be in it to win,” Al Maktoum was cited on GamesBids.com. Other potential bidders are Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Rome and Venice, Madrid, and Tusla, Oklahoma.
