Dragon boat racing is a spectacular sight on many of the lakes and rivers around the world during the Dragon Boat Festival, or Duan Wu Jie (端午節).

In ancient China, it was said that dragons were heavenly creatures who ruled the rivers and lakes. They had magical powers and could race across the sky.

It’s not hard to let your imagination run wild with the sight of these vibrant, long wooden boats, with their fabulous dragon heads and tails. Each has 20 or so rowers thrashing the waters with their oars to the beat of a drummer seated at the helm.

Maybe you didn’t get to see all the action at this year’s festivals, so here is a glimpse of some of these amazing dragon boats as they do battle.
