Ms. Levinson, no stranger within the performing arts community, has been very successful in the field of arts management. She greatly enjoyed the performance.
One enormously engaging aspect of the DPA performance is the backdrop, which sets the scene of each performance—from heavenly paradises to pastoral mountain vistas. She was very taken by this incorporation and said: “The backdrop, the screen, just was beyond all beyond. I mean it was really magnificent the way spirituality floated from the screen down into the human form and was again articulated out. … The screen is really magnificent and beautifully executed. And the traditional painting … I liked the integration of the arts very much.”
She also commented on how the DPA orchestra adds a special element to the show simply due to the quality of the sound. She said, “I was pleasantly surprised, I did not really know that there would be a live orchestra, but once I saw there was, it really elevated the whole quality of the performance.”
And added, “Both the music and costumes are just phenomenal.”
When asked what her favorite performance Ms. Levinson said, “I think the last scene was really very powerful, ‘Knowing the True Picture Offers Ultimate Hope.’” She also added, “‘The Miraculous Exhibit.’ I loved … the visual arts and the spirituality coming from the piece.”
On the DPA performance as a whole she said, “I think its very high quality and very well done, as I said, there are some extraordinary things to it. I think that your trying to bridge a gap between imparting traditional values and traditional point of views with something that contemporary audiences will understand and relate too. And I think that’s really important. The cross cultural, the bilingual nature of the performance, the dancers and the performers are beautiful, and they are just really powerfully beautiful.”
At the end of the interview, she touched on a very essential point of the DPA by saying, “I think it’s a challenge to have people reach out and understand that it is traditional and also groundbreaking for you to be here.” It is indeed true. The air of the great Tang dynasty is being revived with an even grander magnificence.
The DPA will continue through Sunday, Jan. 11, at San Francisco’s War Memorial Opera House.
