"I have seen theatrical performances; I enjoy ballet and opera, but I have never seen this kind of show before…I would definitely recommend it to my friends." Beyond the music and dance, Mr. Zegelman continued, was a message we can all relate to.
"I really liked the scene with Monkey King [The Monkey King Triumphs]. … When the monster tried to be a beautiful woman and lead them astray, I felt that had very true implications. He tried to lead the Buddha from the path to the truth. Often times in life that is what happens; things lead us astray and we do not see things for what they really are. We don't see the monster; we see the beautiful woman. We are deceived by appearances. That one moved me the most."
Moral tales from ancient times were only part of the Chinese history on display. Mr. Zegelman's colleague, Ms. Sparks, was also touched by the substance of the show. "My favorite part was about the persecution because it was a bit shocking what I saw. I read the program and understand now what the message was."
Ms. Sparks was referring to the dance bringing light to the persecution of the traditional spiritual practice, Falun Gong, in China today. Unlike any other cultural show, this year's world tour by Divine Performing Arts (DPA) International Company is history in the making.
