INDIANAPOLIS—In the first of two shows at the Murat Theater in Indianapolis on Saturday, Divine Performing Arts (DPA) thrilled the audience with its lavish presentation of Chinese traditional culture.

Ms. Welch, an Indiana state representative, described the show as “fabulous.”

“It was wonderful,” she said. “It was so exciting with all the multiple talents that were demonstrated by the Chinese people here, especially helping to retain the culture, the ancient culture. You could feel the energy in the audience, from the performances, from all of the young men and women, from the dancers to the singers.”

Currently on its 2009 global tour, this is the first time DPA has brought its unique show to Indianapolis. DPA is a New York-based performance company founded by leading Chinese artists seeking to revive China’s traditional culture and present it to audiences around the world through classical Chinese dance and music.

Classical Chinese dance is a unique dance heritage. In its early stages it was mainly passed down among the common people, through members of the imperial court, and as part of ancient theater. Over the years dancers refined, experimented with, and reworked it to arrive at the extraordinary system of classical Chinese dance known today.

The centerpiece of the DPA shows, Chinese dance is part of the divinely inspired heritage that is China’s 5,000-year-old culture, and one means by which that culture lives on.

Ms. Welch was happy that the show is playing in Indianapolis.

“I’m glad that they chose to come to Indianapolis, to be able to share the wonderful culture of the Chinese people.’

Along with a live orchestra that combines Chinese and Western music and instruments, the show also features accomplished solo singers and musicians and an innovative digital backdrop that provides an animated setting to complement each dance

In a salute to the Lunar New Year, Ms. Welch parted by saying, “I just want to say Happy New Year!”
