A 3-month-old boxer puppy was shot in the head, dragged behind a car, and spray painted, according to Rescue Dogs Rock NYC.

Sammie was taken to Paws & Claws Animal Clinic in Columbia, South Carolina, for treatment, according to the YouCaring page that was setup to help pay for his vet expenses.

According to the page, he couldn’t stand or walk.

“Sammy has the bullet hole in his head, which you can see in the photos. His skin is ripped and sliced wide open from being dragged behind a vehicle and we are told the bones in at least one of his back legs are crushed,” the page said.

Though Sammie will likely lose at least one leg, veterinarians are still fighting to save his other legs.

Simon, a border collie, who is recovering from mange and neglect, noticed Sammie suffering. The collie stayed by Sammie’s side to comfort him.

After their first encounter, the two became inseparable.

Sammie had his first surgery last week, which lasted more than 3 hours, according to WGNTV.

Though Sammie is recovering, vets are concerned about infections in the bone since Sammie injuries were 4 to 5 days old by the time he had surgery, the station reported.

Sammie will be kept on strict cage rest; but Simon is sure to be close by.
