The Morgan County Humane Society in Indiana is searching for the person responsible for shooting a 4-year-old Labrador retriever in the face, and has offered a $1,000 reward for information, Fox 59 reports.

“The jaw had been blown apart,” said Dr. Lisa Lembke. “We later determined it had been a gunshot wound.”

Someone had noticed that the dog was making his way down a road with the messed-up jaw before calling local officials.

“Without treating the infection and the damage to his lower jaw, he would’ve died,” Lembke added. “He would’ve starved to death.”

“We make him a blended mixture of dog food so he’s able to eat that successfully,” said Jacque Kaufman of the Morgan Co. Humane Society, according to the report.

Kaufman said that people are “pretty upset” over the dog’s injury.
