Daniel Covington, a former Louisville Cardinal football player, was shot and killed in Louisville early Thursday morning, ESPN reported.
The 23-year-old former defensive back was shot at about 2:30 a.m. Thursday, according to police who responded to shots fired in downtown Louisville. He was pronounced dead at around 3:00 a.m. with gunshot wounds to his chest and left arm, Rita Taylor, a deputy Jefferson County, Kentucky coroner said.
“We are all shocked and deeply saddened to learn of this tragic event,” Louisville athletic director Tom Jurich said, according to CBS News.
“It is very painful to see this happen to a member of our athletic family. We want to extend our deepest sympathies to Daniel’s family and friends,” he added.
Police have not yet arrested anyone for the shooting.
