We all know that waking up is hard to do. Whether it’s the alarm going off on Monday morning as the work week starts or waking up from a great nap on a lazy Sunday, the first few moments of coming back to wakefulness can be difficult.
You’re not always sure what’s going on, and if you slept hard enough, you might not even recognize where you are at first. Ever thought about the expressions that might be playing across your face as you come to?
Well, one dad who has been capturing his son Oliver’s journey on camera for over seven years just happened to get a perfect example of many of the emotions we all feel upon waking.
The child in question is named Oliver Reese, and his family’s last name starts with a B, hence the channel and sites his dad posts to are called “For the ORB.” Oliver is a pretty expressive child who loves to smile and laugh but can also look very downcast when things don’t go his way.
This range of feelings was perfectly expressed in his dad’s video, “Baby Oliver wakes up with every emotion.” According to About Kids Health, by about 8 to 10 months old, babies will display a full range of emotions: “interest, joy, surprise, anger, sadness, disgust, and fear.”
As the video in question begins, Oliver starts to wake up with a big yawn and smacks his lips a little bit, as though he were just dreaming about eating. He then proceeds to scrunch his face up and starts wiggling around, at times looking uncomfortable or grumpy, at others as though a smile is peeking out across his face.
He begins to move his arms around and looks a little sad or maybe fussy, almost looking as though he’s going to cry a bit. He starts to thrash around a bit more—maybe his nap went on too long and he’s restless? Then he looks as though he’s going to have a big cry. We’ve all woken up on the wrong side of the bed before!
But after having a moment of being upset, perhaps while he was still stuck between his dreams and waking up, Oliver opens his eyes very wide and seems to be very surprised about where he is and who that strange man behind the camera is.
He blinks several times, slowly taking in the scene around him and his dad’s camera. Then all of sudden, he realizes just who that silly cameraman is, and a big smile breaks out across his chubby face. His eyes light up as he see his dad, and he starts to laugh, sticking his tongue out a little.
But just as Oliver seemed to be getting happier about being awake, a storm cloud appears to pass over him, and his little brow furrows. But it passes just as soon as it came, and he’s back to smiling and laughing again.
What could have prompted such an impressive display of facial expressions, which most professional actors would have a very hard time competing with? Many viewers speculated that Oliver might be working on something in his diaper, but his dad wrote: “Answer to the comments was he pooping: NO, his diaper was clean.”
Whatever the reason for this amazing waking-up video, people loved it. It currently has almost reached 9.5 million views! Meanwhile, Oliver has grown and grown and is currently 7 years old and still having lots of fun adventures that his dad shares online.
Though Oliver is just enjoying being a kid, his parents are using the attention from YouTube wisely. As his dad wrote on For the ORB: “All profits from this channel go into [Oliver’s] college fund, so the more you watch, the more you help.” Now that’s something to smile about!
