We do the trawling so you don’t have to! Remember this incredible moment from the America’s Got Talent audition archives? A bemused cowboy hubby from Maceo, Kentucky, made a huge impression at his blind audition after his wife, Shellie Brown, tricked him into performing.
The loved-up couple shared how they would sing to one another around the breakfast table every morning. However, Shellie suspected that husband Marty deserved a bigger audience. So she called in sick, put Marty’s guitar in the car, and started driving.
According to 14 News, the then-47-year-old singer, who was a carpenter by trade, had no idea where they were headed. “Me and my buddy we lay tile, build porches and stuff like that,” a humble and clearly rather nervous Marty told the AGT cameras in behind-the-scenes footage for the show.
“But my true love is music,” he continued. “Everybody’s gotta have dreams! The Colonel,” he went on, sharing an endearing example, “he was 64 or 65 years old before his dream came true. Next thing you know, we’ve got Kentucky Fried Chicken!”
As Marty strode onto the stage and whooped to the audience, the judges swapped incredulous glances. “If the judges like me, that’s great!” Marty had confided backstage. “If they don’t like me,” he added with a grin, “then blame my wife.”
But luckily for the unsuspecting cowboy, he blew them all away. The second he started to sing, Marty had all four judges and the audience in the palm of his hand. He crooned away, delivering a haunting country-style rendition of Bob Dylan’s “Make You Feel My Love.” Incidentally, it was his wife’s favorite song.
Today's the BIG DAY! Marty is recording his first album in 25 years! We are so excited for everyone to hear this new music he's been writing! #Americana #Nashville #songwriter
Marty’s audition, which happened in June of 2013, was shared on YouTube and is so, so worth a revisit. Especially if you didn’t see him the first time around!
As his final notes died away, Marty nodded to the audience, thanking them while blushing profusely. The reason for the red face? A well-deserved standing ovation. Judge Heidi Klum, touched by the couple’s intimate connection, also invited Shellie onto the stage with Marty, and the singer’s heart was filled to bursting.
Great weekend in Kissimmee Florida!!
“This is the real star right here!” Marty shared proudly.
Catching on to Shellie’s trick, judge Howie Mandel halted proceedings for a brief moment to ask: “He had no idea?” Shellie shook her head. “That’s amazing!” Howie replied, his reverence for Marty’s performance doubling on the spot.
Let's play a little game tonight. What is Blake Shelton's favorite karaoke song? #fridaynight
“Without a doubt, you are a great undiscovered treasure,” Howard Stern chimed in. “Where have you been, and thank goodness for that woman!” And with those words, Marty’s life (and career) changed forever; the judges voted him straight through to the glitz and glam of the Las Vegas rounds.
“Even if I win that million,” Marty previously confided to his wife backstage, “I’m still gonna fix my own car.” We’re unsure whether or not Marty is still his own mechanic, but life certainly looks a little different for the humble country singer these days.
I said "do you think I can?" And she said "yes". The rest is pretty much history. There's nothing like the stage at the Grand Ole Opry, so incredibly thankful for this moment! Download it here: http://smarturl.it/MartyLove – <3 Thank you Lord….Marty & Shellie Brown
