Clements, 58, was fatally shot when he answered the door at his home Tuesday night, authorities said, according to Fox News.
Sheriff’s Lt. Jeff Kramer said Clements was shot to death around 8:30 p.m. local time in Monument, Colo., just north of Colorado Springs.
“We’re less than 12 hours into this investigation,” Kramer said at a press conference, according to KDVR.com. “In terms of a shooting, that’s fairly early. We don’t believe there is an imminent threat to this local community, but because we don’t have a suspect and don’t know the whereabouts of any suspects, we do want folks to remain vigilant.”
Clements is survived by his wife and two daughters. It is unclear if his family was home at the time of the shooting.
Kramer said a family member called 911 to report the shooting and officers found Clements dead in his home.
Governor John Hickenlooper appointed Clements to serve as the head of DOC in 2011. Hickenlooper sent a letter to DOC employees early Wednesday morning on March 20, confirming that Clements had been killed, according to KDVR.com.
“We have no more details than that,” Hickenlooper wrote. “I am so sad. I have never worked with a better person than Tom, and I can’t imagine our team without him. … As your Executive Director, he helped change and improve DOC in two years more than most people could do in eight years.”
Hickenlooper ordered flags to be lowered to half-staff at all public buildings statewide until the day after Clements funeral, according to KDVR.com.
