THE BOX OFFICE NUMBERS ARE IN with Disney’s “Cinderella” leading the pack raking in a ginormous 70,053,000 from the 3845 nationwide theaters it was released in this past Friday.
Predicted by many to become thee most successful Disney production of all time with regard to popularity and box office numbers, projections for this release were at a reported 50-60 million. Those projections were handily busted with the over 70 million dollar opening weekend.
This latest production of the Disney classic stays true to what most of us recall about the fairy tale. It is the story of Ella (dubbed – “Cinder”-Ella by her mean step mother and sisters). Ella (portrayed by Lily James) enjoys a close relationship with her beloved father. After the death of her mother Ella’s father remarries and Ella seeks a supportive relationship with her new stepmother portrayed by the incomparable Cate Blanchett, and her two daughters Anastasia (Holliday Grainger) and Drisella (Sophia McShera). But all is shot to hell when Ella’s father passes away. The family dynamic transitions into a hellish environment for Ella. With the household now controlled by her jealous stepmother and stepsisters, Ella’s status as her father’s beloved natural born daughter is downgraded to nothing more than a mere servant to be taunted and humiliated.
Disney short FROZEN FEVER also premiered with CINDERELLA
“Have courage and be kind” are they dying words of Ella’s beloved mother and Ella espouses to live by them rather than succumb to the unwarranted mistreatment by her new family. While in the woods she meets a handsome stranger whom she believes is nothing more than a palace apprentice – but we all know that he is The Prince.
When Cinderella’s family is invited to a ball at the palace Ella is forbidden to go. But fate steps in to favor her via an old beggar (Helena Bonham Carter) who helps her attend the ball that will ultimately undo her bout of misfortune.
The pumpkin is there. The mice are there. The handsome Prince is there and so are the glass slippers. Walt Disney World attendance is likely to soar after this spring as the theme park enthusiasts flock to meet these rebooted fictional characters face to face.
The new “Cinderella” feature also included a “Frozen” short called “Frozen Fever” which certainly contributed to this weekends Disney box office explosion. Way to make money Disney!
