New York-based classical Chinese dance company Shen Yun Performing Arts will debut in Hong Kong this January, sparking interest not only among Hong Kong residents, but among mainland Chinese as well.
Several prominent figures throughout China wished the Hong Kong Shen Yun performance great success, and many expressed hope that the world-renowned company can soon bring their spiritually uplifting production to the mainland.
One individual interested in the Hong Kong debut is renowned Chinese journalist and current Beijing resident Gao Yu. Gao was awarded the UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize in 1997 and the Golden Pen of Freedom in 1995.
“Everyone I know who has seen Shen Yun says it’s good, so of course we’d also like to enjoy this performance ourselves” said Gao. “Only with genuine beauty and love can such a touching show be produced.”
“If Shen Yun’s performance can win the hearts of the people of Hong Kong, they are sure to call their relatives in the mainland and tell them how good the show is,” she said.
Having only seen a Shen Yun performance through a DVD circulating in mainland China, writer and former Film History and Dramatic Literature professor at the Jilin Fine Arts Academy’s Drama School, Lu Xuesong now lives in Changchun City, Jilin Province.
Lu was happy to hear Shen Yun would be coming to Hong Kong. “I think it does not matter where such a performance takes place,” Lu stated. “What’s important is that it brings happiness to people.”
“This show has a spirit of goodness and morality that can actually benefit society,” Lu continued. “It is because of this spirit that Shen Yun can achieve the success it has, and its kindness has positively impacted humanity. This is not a spirit of blame or anger but one which encourages upholding principles in the face of hardship and suffering. I can’t think of a more kind and beautiful statement.”
Several renowned Chinese attorneys who have seen the Shen Yun DVD are calling upon mainland Chinese tourists to take the opportunity to see Shen Yun in Hong Kong.
“We all want to see a dance and music performance free from Communist Party culture that preserves the traditional Chinese ways,” said Shanghai attorney Zheng Enchong. “This is what the people of China are truly longing for.”
“Shen Yun represents genuine Chinese culture,” stated Beijing attorney Wen Haibo after seeing the DVD. “It is very beautiful and was enjoyable to watch. It has truly captured the essence of our traditional culture.”
“I am especially impressed by the powerful messages portrayed,” Wen continued. “It has helped me realize that the Chinese shows I had seen previously were merely for commercial purposes or had other motives. Shen Yun, on the other hand, has allowed me to see China’s true traditional arts.”
“I am so glad that Shen Yun can perform in Hong Kong,” Wen said. “It should not be long before the performance comes to the mainland.”
