A senseless tragedy struck a town in Texas on what seemed to be a typical Saturday. When the staff at a local restaurant heard the news, they had the option to go home early and make sense of the events. Instead, they stayed at work late and cooked to help feed the heroic first responders.
It was Saturday, Aug. 31, 2019, when tragedy struck the town of Odessa, Texas. A 36-year-old man by the name of Seth Aaron Ator lost his job and then went on a terrifying shooting rampage. As reported by ABC News, the man began his spree after being pulled over for a traffic offense. That seemed to have tipped him over the edge, and he opened fire on the Texas Department of Public Safety trooper before driving off and shooting innocent people at random.
Police officers then shot down the suspect, who seemed to be heading toward a busy mall. But while on his deadly spree, Ator allegedly killed seven people and injured 23 more, including a 17-month-old toddler, who survived, during nearly an hour of terror.
Upon hearing news of the tragic event, the staff at two local Chick-fil-A restaurants were given the option to close down for the night and go home. Instead, they opted to work late to support first responders at the horrific scene. According to a Facebook post by the restaurant, staff were asked if they wanted to remain and help, and “not one person said no.”
The team worked tirelessly and, as they stated, “cooked 500 sandwiches and packaged them with the most joyful hearts and a lot of love.”
The meals were distributed to first responders at the horrific scene, whom the heartwarming post refers to as “true heroes.” Chick-fil-A even posted a lovely video showing staff members happily preparing the chicken sandwiches for them, while smiling and dancing around. A caption sums up their mood, “The joy our team had in being able to help when everyone is hurting was tangible. There is power in kindness.”
