Slideshow: Celebrities at the National Action Network ‘Keepers of the Dream Awards’

A number of celebrities attended "Keepers of the Dream Awards" last Thursday to honor people dedicated to supporting equality for African Americans. The gala was part of the National Action Network's four day National Convention aimed at increasing racial equality in the U.S., hosted by Reverend Al Sharpton.

The four day convention started Wednesday morning with the focus being on the “Measuring the Movement: Black Leadership’s 12-Month Action Plan” where civil rights representatives from all over the country dedicated themselves to the future of African American equality in the U.S.

The "Keepers of the Dream Awards" featured a dedication to recently deceased NAACP Director Benjamin Hooks, as well as a segment devoted to civil rights legend Martin Luther King Jr. [Article continues following slideshow]

Those in attendance included Mariah Carey, Wyclef Jean, Bill Cosby, The Roots, Reverend Jessee Jackson, Violinist Miri Ben-Ari, BET Correndent April Woodard, New York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli, and National Action Network mainstays President Rev. Al Sharpton, Lawyer Sanford Rubenstein, and Executive Director Tamika Mallory.

The National Action network was started by Sharpton in 1991. The headquarters in located in Harlem, New York and it is dedicated to addressing unfair treatment of African Americans in modern society.
