
The one-day festival, held simultaneously in Toronto, Vancouver, Lethbridge, Saskatoon, Kitchener, and Halifax, celebrates Canadian reading and writing and promotes literacy.
Authors presenting at the Scotiabank Giller Prize Bestsellers Stage in Toronto this year include Guy Vanderhaeghe with his latest book “A Good Man,” set in the late 19th century Wild West, and Neil Pasricha with “The Book of Even More Awesome,” a sequel to the international bestseller “The Book of Awesome.”
Chef Michael Smith will also be presenting his latest cookbook, “Chef Michael Smith’s Kitchen,” a collection of his all-time favourite recipes. Later in the day, Jian Ghomeshi, award-winning broadcaster and host of the CBC radio show “Q,” will be giving a behind-the-scenes look at this year’s list of nominees for the prestigious Scotiabank Giller Prize.
Other attractions at the Toronto event, held at Queen’s Park, include the Cooks ‘n’ Books Stage, where attendees will be treated to demonstrations and samples from some of Canada’s top chefs, and the Great Books Marquee, which features a variety of titles in fiction, non-fiction, short stories, and poetry.
New this year is the Healthy Living Stage, featuring some of Canada’s best-known health and wellness authors, including bestselling author and naturopathic doctor Natasha Turner presenting her latest work, “The Supercharged Hormone Diet.”
Kids will have their own activity tents where they can learn creative crafts, watch presentations inspired by new children’s books, and meet some of Canada’s most famous children’s authors and illustrators.
The Word On The Street festival grew out of the concept of the Toronto Book and Magazine Fair 21 years ago to become Canada’s largest annual book and magazine festival, drawing over 200,000 visitors each year.
Some of the featured authors in other cities this year include Evelyn Lau and Timothy Taylor in Vancouver, Alexander MacLeod and Shauntay Grant in Halifax, Angie Abdou and Betty Hegerat in Lethbridge, Scott Chantler and Trevor Cole in Kitchener, and Sandra Birdsell and Yann Martel in Saskatoon, to name just a few.
